  • NAMS Preliminary Statement on New WHI Report on HT and Breast Cancer
    From
Wulf H. Utian, MD, PhD, DSc(Med), Executive Director, NAMS

The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) is aware of the press reports of WHI Study results presented last Saturday at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. However, press commentary and personal opinions of physicians expressed in the press reports cannot be commented on until independent reviewers have access to the prepublication data, or to the scientific paper when published.

The level of risk described in the media reports appears to mirror the level of increased risk published in July 2002 and modified in subsequent publications from the WHI.

NAMS will monitor this situation closely and issue a clear statement on the data as soon as it becomes available. In the interim, NAMS is not recommending any change from its current position statement on postmenopausal hormone therapy use, accessible at http://www.menopause.org/aboutmeno/consensus.aspx.
